Unlike roulette and slots, blackjack is a relatively simple casino game where the outcome is not 100% luck based. Face it, there’s not much you can do skills-wise to influence the outcome of a roulette game. The same goes for slots. In both cases, the house edge will make sure you don’t walk away a winner from the tables (unless you take advantage of variance, that is).
Blackjack is a game in which the house edge can be reduced to zero and, if you’re a good enough card-counter, it can even be turned around.
Normally, there’s a 2-3% house edge on a casino blackjack game, in favor of the house of course (this means that if you wager $100, in the long run you’ll end up winning about 97-98 dollars) That doesn’t sound too good, now does it?
By learning and applying basic blackjack strategy, you will reduce this house edge. By learning some simple card-counting techniques, you may even erase it altogether.
Basic strategy consists of a few tables that tell you what action you need to take (split, hit, stand, or double) in relation to what the dealer’s exposed hand is.
It also takes into account whether you have a soft or a hard hand.
Basic card counting strategies usually involve assigning a value of +1 to cards 9, 0 to 8,9 and -1 to the low-cards. The player only keeps a sum in mind. Whenever a low card leaves the deck, he subtracts one, whenever a high card leaves, he adds one to his sum. If 8 or 9 leave the deck, he adds or subtracts nothing.
The higher the sum he gets, in the positive range, the less favorable the deck is for him.
Whenever there’s a higher concentration of high cards in the deck than low cards, our player needs to get bolder because high cards work in his favor.
